I am an Animal Reiki Practitioner/Teacher and work with all animals; domestic and wild. I am also a member/teacher with Shelter Animal Reiki Association (SARA~www.shelteranimalreikiassociation.org), whose
mission is to bring the healing benefits of Reiki meditation to rescued animals and their caregivers worldwide. I am grateful for all I have learned and continue to learn from animals. Prior to becoming an Animal Reiki Practitioner, I was a social worker for 23 years. I worked with addictions part of that time but most of my career was spent working in the medical field, both in home health care and in a hospital. It was during the time that I worked in the hospital, 2004, that I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Like many people who face serious illness, my life changed in unimaginable ways. Initially I pursued conventional treatment but my health continued to decline so I stopped this treatment regime and started exploring alternative options (on a funny note: we'd combined holistic medicine and allopathic medicine for many years with our animals but I had no exposure to holistic care for people at that time). Unfortunately, my health didn't significantly improve, but the downward spiral did slow. I continued to work while I attempted to problem solve my declining health. In late 2008 I had to quit working due to the seriousness of my health issues. I continued searching for options and a friend recommended Reiki. I'd never heard of Reiki but gave it a shot. My experience was so negative; I would have been ok to never have heard about Reiki again. A short time later the same friend told me about a beginning Reiki class she'd taken and a basic tenet was self-healing. I decided to take the class, as I was very excited to learn tools I could use myself, since I'd spent a lot of time and money looking for answers. From the moment I walked in the door, my experience with Reiki was positive. Not only could I use this practice for myself, but I immediately knew I wanted to practice this with animals. That weekend I began to research how to practice Reiki with animals. I contacted Kathleen Prasad, a pioneer in the field of Animal Reiki (www.animalreikisource.com). I got her book, Animal Reiki, which she co-authored with Elizabeth Fulton. I signed up for my first Animal Reiki class. A door I never even knew existed had opened. After taking many classes, I eventually decided to complete my level 3 training to deepen my connection with Reiki. This also meant I could teach but that was not my goal. However, an opportunity to teach a couple of people immediately presented itself. Teaching that class made me realize that teaching others Animal Reiki would have an even bigger impact than if I just continued to practice it. Anyone who learns Animal Reiki has the tools to help themselves and the tools to help others, whether other people or animals. Only good can come out of that. Animal Reiki has given me hope, something I desperately needed. It has also given me purpose. It truly speaks to my heart. I am so grateful to be part of a healing practice where my goal is to help facilitate whatever healing the animal is open to receiving. Animal Reiki is about providing supportive care, not replacing other medical care, and certainly not making diagnoses. |
